The U.S. Space Force on Sept. 18 released a request for prototype proposals for space-based interceptors, with responses due Oct. 2.
The service’s Program Executive Office for Space Combat Power is managing the program, the marquee element of the space-based missile defense layer of the Golden Dome for America missile shield.
The government intends to award multiple firm, fixed-price other transaction agreements, as well as “prize competitions,” the notice said.
The notice did not disclose any requirements or how many contracts will be awarded. The space-based interceptor layer would be capable of shooting down adversary missiles in their boost or midcourse phases.
Aviation Week reported Aug. 28 that the service was considering an acquisition strategy in which prospective industry partners would self-fund their SBI prototypes for several years ahead of an on-orbit demonstration, expected to take place by 2028. Participants could have limited opportunities to recoup funding via prizes awarded for completing certain gates, or demonstrations, along the way, sources said at the time.
The White House wants an operational Golden Dome capability in place by 2029, the end of President Donald’s Trump’s current term.
