HyImpulse, a Germa-based rocket developer, is finalizing preparations for the maiden flight of its SR75 rocket, slated for late April to early May 2024 from the Koonibba Test Range in southern Australia. This launch will showcase a novel propulsion system that may redefine how rockets are transported and launched globally.

The SR75, a single-stage rocket, embodies a leap in propulsion technology, employing a hybrid system that utilizes paraffin wax and liquid oxygen. This forthcoming launch from the Koonibba Test Range-managed in collaboration with Southern Launch, a key player in Australia's space industry-will serve as the first real-world test of the SR75, moving beyond the confines of theoretical design and controlled testing environments to demonstrate its capabilities in the field.

Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the partnership with the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation in developing the test range's permanent facilities. This collaboration not only underscores the technical aspirations of the venture but also its community and regional engagement, with the launch poised to be a historic event for the Koonibba Community and the Ceduna region at large.

Mario Kobald, CEO of HyImpulse, conveyed confidence in the SR75's upcoming performance, emphasizing the extensive testing conducted in Europe and the significance of this launch in gaining valuable flight heritage. Kobald also noted the launch's role in validating the technology for the sounding rocket market and laying the groundwork for their future orbital launch vehicle, the SL1.

The SR75's hybrid engine technology stands out for its use of non-explosive fuel, which presents fewer risks in transportation and handling, enabling safer and more efficient launch processes. This aspect is particularly crucial for HyImpulse's vision of a responsive rocket system that can be launched from various locations worldwide without the logistical and safety challenges often associated with traditional rocket fuels.

Christian Schmierer, Co-CEO of HyImpulse, elaborated on the strategic advantages of their propulsion technology, emphasizing the goal of offering a rapid, efficient, and globally deployable rocket solution. This approach reflects a broader trend in the space industry towards more versatile and accessible launch options, catering to an expanding array of commercial and scientific objectives.

The SR75 is designed as a sounding rocket, which will allow HyImpulse to recover the rocket post-launch and analyze performance data from onboard systems. This capability is unique among commercial ranges and critical for refining the rocket's design and operational parameters.

Looking ahead, the successful demonstration of the SR75 could accelerate the development of HyImpulse's SL1 Orbital Launcher, intended to leverage a configuration of ten SR75 motors to deliver payloads of up to 600kg to low earth orbit. The prospective use of the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex for future launches underscores the ambition to expand Australia's role in the global space launch infrastructure.
