Two veteran Russian cosmonauts will venture outside the International Space Station for a spacewalk Wednesday, May 29, to retrieve science experiments and conduct maintenance on the orbiting laboratory. Live coverage of the activity will air on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

Expedition 59 Commander Oleg Kononenko and Flight Engineer Alexey Ovchinin are scheduled to open the hatch to the Pirs docking compartment airlock at 11:44 a.m. EDT on May 29 for a spacewalk expected to last 6.5 hours. Live coverage of the spacewalk will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Kononenko, who will be designated extravehicular crew member 1 (EV1), in the suit with blue stripes, and Ovchinin, who will be EV2, in the suit with red stripes, will install handrails on the Russian segment of the complex, retrieve science experiments from the Poisk module’s hull, and conduct maintenance work. The spacewalk will be the 217th in support of station assembly, maintenance and upgrades and the fourth outside the station this year.

This will be the fifth spacewalk in Kononenko’s career and the first for Ovchinin, who will become station commander next month. Kononenko is scheduled to return to Earth June 24, with crewmates Anne McClain of NASA and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, wrapping up a six-and-a-half-month mission living and working in space.

Russian cosmonauts go on long spacewalk

MOSCOW. Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Alexei Ovchinin have begun a six-hour spacewalk from the International Space Station (ISS). The two cosmonauts opened at 6:44 p.m. Moscow time the hatch of the Pirs docking module on Russia's ISS segment and got on the ISS external surface to install equipment on the ISS' exterior and take samples during several scientific experiments.

These Russian cosmonauts will build a passage from the Poisk (MIM-2) small research module to the Zarya functional cargo module to cut the distance between the two sections of the station.

A sensor mockup adapter will be removed from the MIM-2 handle to ensure the 370-day orbit life of Soyuz MS manned spaceships and at least 13,320 hours of thermometers' warranty operating time.

The cosmonauts will also remove devices installed on the Poisk module as part of the long-term experiment Test and will take samples from the ISS' exterior. The samples will undergo chemical, toxicological, and microbiological tests.

Additionally, Ovchinin and Kononenko will clean the porthole of the Poisk module's hatch. Substances removed from the porthole will be studied.

The cosmonauts will remove panels carrying samples of the space experiment Endurance. The samples are exposed to outer space in loaded and unloaded modes.

Ovchinin and Kononenko will finally disconnect cables and remove measuring units from the station's exterior to complete the space experiment Situation, which included geophysical studies and environmental monitoring of electromagnetic emissions. The equipment will be dumped in outer space.

Russian cosmonauts finalize spacewalk

MOSCOW. Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Alexei Ovchinin have finalized their spacewalk and returned to the International Space Station (ISS).

Roscosmos broadcast the extravehicular activity.

Kononenko and Ovchinin entered the airlock chamber and closed the hatch of the Pirs docking module of the ISS' Russian segment at 12:44 a.m. Moscow time on Thursday.

The spacewalk started at 6:42 p.m. Moscow time on Wednesday to install equipment on the station's exterior and to take samples collected as part of scientific experiments.

Before the spacewalk, Ovchinin and Kononenko congratulated Alexei Leonov, who was the first man to go into outer space in 1965. They had a portrait of Leonov, who celebrates his 85th birthday on Thursday, with them during the spacewalk.

The cosmonauts installed a bridge between the Poisk small research module (MIM-2) and the Zarya functional cargo module as a shortcut for future extravehicular activity.

They removed a connector with mockup sensors from the MIM-2 handle for the purpose of 370-day orbit life of Soyuz-MS manned spaceships and at least 13,320 hours of thermometers' warranty operating time.

Besides, the cosmonauts removed exposition devices of the long-term experiment Test from the Poisk module and took samples. The samples from the exterior of the ISS' Russian segment will undergo chemical, toxicological, and microbiological tests. A towel, which was placed outside the ISS ten years ago, was also removed. The tissue will be taken to the Earth for studying.

Ovchinin and Kononenko did some cleaning, as well. They cleaned the porthole of the Pirs hatch. The space sediment from their cleaning instrument will be studied on the Earth.

The cosmonauts removed panels carrying samples of the space experiment Vynoslivost (Resilience). The loaded and unloaded materials used in space works were exposed to outer space factors.

In the end, Ovchinin and Kononenko disconnected cables and removed measuring units of the space experiment Obstanovka (Situation) focused on geophysical studies and environmental monitoring of electromagnetic emissions. The equipment was dumped into outer space.

This is the first spacewalk of Ovchinin, and the fifth one of Kononenko.
