Modeling our Magnetic Sun
"Magnetic carpet" on the Sun, simulated with the SolarBox code using NASA's Pleiades supercomputer. The "carpet" consists of small-scale magnetic fields generated by turbulent dynamo action just beneath the solar surface. This image shows a sample of magnetic field lines forming magnetic loops, with footpoints in the solar photosphere (horizontal wavy surface). Orange-red patches on the surface show concentrations of the magnetic field (color intensity is proportional to field strength). Credit: Irina Kitiashvili, Tim Sandstrom, NASA/Ames
