Oman is set to conduct its inaugural experimental scientific rocket launch named Duqm-1 on December 4. This significant event, scheduled for Wednesday, will be overseen by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, particularly through the National Space Program. Strategic partnerships within the sector are also a key part of this venture, with the execution and investment responsibilities falling to Etlaq Company, a branch of the National Aerospace Services Company (NASCOM), according to Oman Observer reports.
The Duqm-1 mission marks the commencement of Oman's journey into space exploration. The rocket, standing at 6.5 meters tall and weighing 80 kg without fuel (123 kg with fuel), is designed to ascend 140 km above sea level at a speed of 1530 m/s. Expected to last around 15 minutes, this mission represents a crucial step for Oman. However, due to security reasons, the launch will be conducted without public attendance. Looking ahead, Oman has outlined plans for three additional launches in 2025, the details of which will be disclosed in due course.
Etlaq Company's involvement in this project comes as part of a usufruct agreement with the Ministry for the utilization of a plot in the Al Kahl area, located in the Wilayat of Duqm, Al-Wusta Governorate. This arrangement facilitates the establishment of a spaceport intended for the launch of space rockets. NASCOM, established fully by Omanis in 2021, aims to serve the space sector and invest in its projects, strengthening Oman's foothold in this innovative field.
Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, underscored that the Duqm-1 project aligns with strategic initiatives designed to leverage Oman's strategic capabilities within the executive program for the space sector. He highlighted the project as the initial step towards creating a spaceport for launching scientific rockets and satellites, aiming to fulfill commercial and research needs in space launches while fostering regional and international cooperation in the space sector.
Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shidhani from MTCIT elaborated on Oman's unique geographical advantages that make it an ideal location for space activities. Situated close to the equator and the Tropic of Cancer, Oman offers reduced costs and time for launching space objects into various orbits. Additionally, the project will take advantage of the coastal strip overlooking the ocean, providing a safe environment for such ventures, and the presence of the free economic zone in Duqm, which is instrumental in attracting global investments.
Oman is embarking on an ambitious journey to reshape its economy with Oman Vision 2040, a strategic plan aimed at lessening the nation's reliance on oil and gas by diversifying its sources of income. This strategy places a strong emphasis on adopting cutting-edge technologies, notably within the burgeoning space industry, marking a significant shift towards a tech-driven economic landscape.
In 2020, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) was established to usher Oman into a new era of technological progress. A key initiative under its direction is the Digital Economy Program, which was launched in 2021.
