Two Russian cosmonauts are scheduled to conduct a spacewalk outside the International Space Station Wednesday, June 2, to continue preparing the Pirs docking compartment airlock for undocking and disposal later this year.

Live coverage will begin at 1 a.m. EDT, with the spacewalk beginning about 1:20 a.m. on NASA Television, the agency’s website, and the NASA app.

Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov of Roscosmos will emerge from the Poisk module on the space-facing side of the Zvezda service module for a spacewalk expected to last about six and a half hours. The two cosmonauts will disconnect all external mechanical links between Pirs and the station, reposition spacewalk hardware and antennas, and relocate other gear previously used for spacecraft dockings to Pirs.

During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts will prepare Pirs for removal from its port by the uncrewed Progress 77 cargo ship on the Earth-facing side of Zvezda, clearing the way for the arrival of the new Russian Multi-Purpose Laboratory Module named “Nauka,” which is Russian for “science.” The undocking of Pirs is scheduled for this summer, about two days after Nauka launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The cosmonauts also will replace a fluid flow regulator on the nearby Zarya module and replace biological and material science samples on the exterior of the Russian modules.

Novitskiy, who is designated as extravehicular crew member 1 (EV1), will wear a Russian Orlan spacesuit with red stripes. Dubrov will wear a spacesuit with blue stripes as extravehicular crew member 2 (EV2). This will be the first spacewalk for both cosmonauts and the 238th spacewalk overall in support of space station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades. It also marks the sixth spacewalk of 2021.

Russians end 7-hour spacewalk at International Space Station

Two Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station have wrapped up a spacewalk that lasted more than 7 hours to prepare for the arrival of a new Russian module

MOSCOW -- Two Russian cosmonauts ventured for more than 7 hours outside the International Space Station to prepare for the arrival of a new Russian module.

It was the first spacewalk for both Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov, who arrived at the space station in April, and it lasted 7 hours and 19 minutes. It was broadcast live by NASA.

The two focused on getting the space station ready for the undocking and disposal of the Pirs docking compartment, which is set to be replaced next month by the new Nauka (Science) multipurpose laboratory module.

They disconnected an antenna and other equipment from the Pirs and stowed them on the outside of the station for future use in preparation for the module's disposal.

Novitsky and Dubrov also replaced a fluid flow regulator and two sets of biological and material science samples on the exterior of the Russian modules.

The launch of the Russian Nauka lab module has been continuously pushed back over technical issues. Russian space officials have said it will finally be launched in July.

Russian cosmonauts go on first spacewalk in 2021

This spacewalk will be special, because it will combine three elements: regular maintenance works, space experiments and preparations for the docking of a new ISS module, Nauka

Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov opened the hatch of the Poisk small research module of the International Space Station and embarked on this year’s first spacewalk to prepare the station for new science module.

The effort began at 8:20 a.m. Moscow Time as scheduled and the extravehicular activity (EVA) will last six hours and 50 minutes. Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Novitsky and Dubrov will carry out their activity in Orlan-MKS spacesuits: Novitsky is wearing the gear with red stripes and Dubrov is clad in the spacesuit with blue stripes.

The previous spacewalk was conducted on November 18, 2020.

Wednesday’s spacewalk will be special, because it will combine three elements: regular maintenance works, space experiments and preparations for the docking of a new ISS module, Nauka, which is Russian for "science."

At the very start, the cosmonauts will replace the removable panel of the fluid flow regulator on the Zarya functional cargo block. This job was supposed to be done by cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov during the previous Russian spacewalk, but they failed to complete it.

Also, the cosmonauts will prepare the Pirs module for undocking from the ISS. It will be replaced by the Nauka module that will fly to the ISS later this summer.

Novitsky and Dubrov will also install equipment for several scientific experiments on the exterior surface of the Poisk module.

During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts are scheduled to have four pauses for rest, each lasting five minutes.
