Scientists have proposed building an experimental cosmic ray station in the Altai territory because the region has the world's best astrological climate, Roman Raikin, the pro-rector for international cooperation at Altai State University, told journalists on Friday.
"Our regional is a place with the best astroclimate in Russia, and we have long been saying that this territory should be considered as a location of the next-generation experimental installation. As far as gamma-ray astronomy is concerned, we have more cloudless nights than any other Russian region and at night it is possible to register quanta emanating from space," Raikin said after opening a cosmic ray symposium in Barnaul on Friday.
Such big experimental installations are operating in Buryatia and Yakutia, he said. The project is quite expensive though: building a similar station to register gravitational waves cost $300 million.
"It is necessary to work and raise both federal and own funding for these purposes," Raikin said.
The symposium was attended by well-known astrophysicists from over 20 countries who presented the results of experiments in high energy physics.
